Characteristics

Climbing shrub; young stems with spreading ferruginous hairs, older stems dark blackish-purple, glabrescent, rugulose.. Leaf-blades elliptic-oblong, 3.5–14 cm. long, 1.8–5.4 cm. wide, rounded, slightly emarginate or obscurely subacute at the apex, rounded or subcordate at the base, thin, ferruginous pilose on both sides when very young, at length glabrous above save for some pubescence on the midrib, sparsely pubescent beneath but with main nerves retaining long ferruginous hairs; venation closely reticulate but only slightly raised on both surfaces; petiole 3–6 mm. long, ferruginous pilose when young.. Flowers solitary or paired, extra-axillary; pedicels 2–3.5 cm. long, pubescent; bracteole situated near the base or middle of the pedicel, leafy, ovate-oblong to rounded-reniform, 0.7–1.8 cm. long, 0.7–1.9 cm. wide, cordate and ± amplexicaul at the base, pubescent.. Sepals very broadly rounded, 1.5 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, ± joined at the base to form an almost round tray, pubescent with rather long ferruginous hairs.. Petals thick, ?yellow, ovate to elliptic; outer (6–)7–8 mm. long, 5 mm. wide, ferruginous tomentose on both sides; inner (4.5–)6–7 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, tomentose outside, glabrous below inside but with longer hairs at the apex inside.. Stamens 15 (numerous fide Boutique), 1.5–2 mm. long; filaments thick, ± 1 mm. long; connective thickened, particularly in the inner stamens, truncate but not hiding anther-cells.. Carpels ± 28; ovary oblong, 1.5–2 mm. long, glabrous, 4–6-ovuled; style ellipsoid or oblong, bilobed and grooved..
