Fruticose annuals or short-lived herbaceous perennials to 90 cm high, with few to many stems arising from base. Stems up to 4 mm across; young branchlets smooth. Leaves ovate, narrowly obovate or obovate, (6–) 10–35 mm long, (1.5–) 2–15 mm wide, flat, margins entire or coarsely toothed distally with obtuse-tipped teeth, apex acute to obtuse and minutely apiculate, lamina smooth adaxially; stipules 0.9–1.5 mm long. Inflorescences sessile or pedunculate; peduncles 0.5–0.8 mm across. Male flowers: calyx lobes ovate, ovate-elliptic or elliptic, 1.2–1.7 mm long; petals reniform, 0.5–1.1 mm long, apex rounded but sometimes notched; staminal filaments 1.1–1.8 mm long; connective tissue 0.1–0.2 mm long; rudimentary ovary absent. Female flowers: calyx lobes ovate to broadly ovate, 1–1.3 mm long; petals absent; styles 2-lobed; lobes c. half the length of style. Fruit ovoid, 2.9–3 mm diam., smooth. Seeds obloid.
Grows in heath, shrubland, woodland and open forest communities on coastal flats, mountain summits, and undulating to hilly terrain. Soils mostly sandy sometimes loamy, shallow to deep overlying a variety of rock types.
