Characteristics

Erect perennial herb or suffrutex, up to 60 cm. tall, often with annual shoots arising from a woody basal region; stems branching freely; internodes 1–3 (4·5) cm. long; vegetative parts, peduncles, pedicels and sepals ± densely pubescent, covered with short recurved or patent and then often gland-tipped hairs, sometimes scattered very much longer patent hairs also present especially on the stem and calyx.

Leaf-lamina 1·5–4 × 0·2–1 cm., lorate to narrowly oblong or very narrowly elliptic to narrowly elliptic, obtuse to subacute at the apex, margin irregularly serrate, base cuneate; petiole 5–10 (14) mm. long; stipules 3–6 (10) mm. long, acicular to subulate.
Inflorescence a pseudumbel of 1–3 flowers; peduncle (1·5) 2·5–4·5 (7·5) cm. long, leaf-opposed or in the axil of the smaller of two apparently opposite leaves; pedicel 1·8–3·4 (4) cm. long; bracts 1–4, 3–8 mm. long, linear.
Petals 18–24 × 8–14 mm., yellowish-white to pale blue, sometimes pink to mauve, veins darker, obovate, apex truncate.
Sepals 9–11 × 2·5–4 mm., narrowly oblong to lanceolate with an acicular apical appendage 1–2 mm. long.
Filaments 8–11·5 mm. long, pubescent; anthers 2–2·5 × 1–1·4 mm.
Extrastaminal glands ovate with a ligulate apical appendage.
Seed 5·1–5·3 × 2–2·4 mm., pale brown, minutely reticulate.
Ovary tomentose; stigmas (2) 2·5–3·6 mm. long, filiform.
Fruit 6–8 (9) cm. long; cocci 12·5–14 × 2·3–2·6 mm.
