Characteristics

Plants small, up to 60 mm high, forming a dense sessile rosette. Corm 14-20 mm diam., bearing small cormlets at base; tunics of coarse, dark fibres. Stem subterranean, produced above ground in fruit, usually with few branches, each bearing an inflorescence. Foliage leaves clustered at base, several, some indistinguishable from rhipidial spathes, up to 100 mm long, linear to lanceolate, falcate or loosely twisted, channelled, margins often undulate, sometimes crisped. Rhipidial spathes, especially the outer, sheathing only at base, with unifacial tip, not clearly distinct from leaves, inner usually entirely sheathing, up to 25 mm long, margins membranous. Flowers fugaceous, white, outer tepal limbs with yellow nectar guides at bases often edged purple, inner tepals usually with purple or grey mark at top of claws and sometimes crests purple in lower half, limbs of all tepals spreading; outer tepals 15-22 x 12-15 mm, claws 8-11 mm long, ascending; inner tepals 13-20 mm long. Filaments up to 6 mm long, united in lower half; anthers 3-4 mm long. Ovary sessile, cylindric-ovoid, 4-5 mm long, style branches ± 8 mm long, crests 5-8 mm long, outer margins often obscurely serrated. Capsules globose-ovoid, up to 10 mm long. Seeds rounded-angular, surface reticulate.
