Characteristics

Plants 400-900 mm high, including leaf. Corm 10-15 mm diam.; tunics of brown fibres sometimes extending upwards in a collar around base. Stem slender, smooth or rarely woolly, usually inclined, with long basal internode and leaf inserted just below rhipidia; with up to 4 short branches, rarely simple, sheathing leaves 12-20 mm long, becoming dry and light brown distally. Foliage leaf solitary, inserted well above ground, channelled, mostly 150-400 mm long, up to 3 mm wide, sometimes seemingly terete with margins closely inrolled. Rhipidial spathes becoming dry and speckled brown distally; inner 34-40 mm long, outer ± 1/2 as long. Flowers fugaceous, blue to violet, outer tepal limbs with yellow nectar guides at bases, claws ascending, limbs reflexed ± 45º; outer tepals 25-30 x 10 mm; inner tepals 20-25 x ± 6 mm. Filaments ± 5 mm long, united in lower 1/3; anthers ± 7 mm long. Ovary ovoid, 4-5 mm long, style branches ± 6 mm long, up to 3 mm wide, crests 4-5 mm long. Capsules ± globose, 5-6 mm diam. Seeds angular.

Leaf 1, inserted just below inflorescence, canaliculate, or nearly terete with margins inrolled. Spathes green to light brown below, margins and apex dry and brown. Inflorescence with blue-violet flowers; nectar guides yellow; tepals spreading, reflexed, outer 25-30 mm long, inner 20-25 mm long. Stamens: filaments ± 5 mm long, united in lower 1/3; anthers 7 mm long. Ovary narrowly obovoid, 4-5 mm long; style branches ± 6 mm long; crests ± 5 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-Mar. Capsule rotund.
Cormous geophyte, up to 0.9 m high, occasionally pubescent. Leaf solitary, round, much longer than flowering stem, inserted on upper part of stem below flowers. Flowers: flowering stem inclining, with 2-4 branches; perianth with outer spathes brown, < 1/2 as long as inner, up to 25 x 10 mm, blue-violet with yellow nectar guides; Dec.-Feb. Fruit a spherical capsule.
