Moraea inconspicua Goldblatt

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae > Moraea

Characteristics

Plants 200-450 mm high. Corm 15-20 mm diam.; tunics brown, ± woody or becoming fibrous, sticky-bituminous on inner surfaces, often persisting with cataphylls to form a collar around base. Stem with up to 3 branches at most aerial nodes, viscous below nodes, with cauline sheathing leaves, ± obtuse or truncate. Foliage leaves 2, linear, either channelled and falcate to trailing or coiled with plane surface, 2-3 mm wide. Rhipidial spathes acute to ± obtuse, becoming dry above, often becoming lacerated, inner 15-30 mm long, outer slightly shorter. Flowers fugaceous, yellow, creamy pink, white or brown, outer tepal limbs with yellow nectar guides at bases; outer tepals 12-18(25) x 5-7 mm, usually reflexed ± 90º (sometimes less), claws 4-8 mm long, 1/2-2/3 as long as limbs, scented of vanilla; inner tepals narrower, usually slightly shorter than outer, limbs similarly reflexed. Filaments 3.5-8.0 mm long, free but contiguous or united in lower part; anthers 2-4 mm long; pollen yellow or orange-red. Ovary ± 3 mm long, included or exserted, style branches 3-6 mm long, crests (1.5-)3.0-10.0 mm long. Capsules broadly ovoid-globose, (6-)7-10 mm long.
More

Leaves usually 2, straight or tightly coiled distally, flat or canaliculate, bent or trailing. Spathes herbaceous, subequal, becoming dry and nerved with age, apex acute to obtuse, brown, rarely lacerate. Inflorescence with inconspicuous, yellow, cream-coloured to dark brown flowers; tepals reflexed, lanceolate, outer 13-18 mm long, inner 12-17 mm long. Stamens: filaments 5-6 mm long, contiguous below, diverging near apex; anthers 3-7 mm long; pollen yellow or orange. Ovary ± 3 mm long, narrowly conic, exserted from spathes; style branches 3-5 mm long. Flowering time Sept.-Dec. Capsule ovate to globose.
Cormous geophyte, 200-450 mm tall, stems sticky, branched. Leaves 2 or 3, linear, channelled and trailing or loosely coiled. Flowers enclosed in obtuse spathes, tiny, yellow to brown or cream, tepal limbs strongly reflexed, filaments free, contiguous, style branches narrow, diverging, crests erect.
