Characteristics

Plants 500-750 mm high. Corm ± globose, ± 20 mm diam.; tunics of coarse, wiry black fibres. Stem several-branched, branches ascending, flexed below rhipidia, with attenuate sheathing leaves with dry, brown tips. Foliage leaves 3 or 4, lowermost basal, remaining cauline, up to 600 mm long, channelled, falcate, bent and trailing distally, up to 20 mm wide. Rhipidial spathes attenuate, dry and brown distally, inner 40-50 mm long, outer ± 2/3 as long. Flowers fugaceous, yellow (rarely orange), nodding to pendent, tepal limbs darkly speckled at bases, reflexed when fully open; outer tepals ± lanceolate, 24-28 x 7-8 mm, claws ± 4 mm long, clasping base of filament column, inner tepals slightly smaller. Filaments united in a column ± 15 mm long, swollen abruptly above base, tapering to apex, velvety in lower half; anthers 3-6 mm long, collapsing and shorter after anthesis, straight, contiguous, red; pollen orange-red (yellow). Ovary ± ovoid, 9-10 mm long; style branches 2.5-3.5 mm long, bifurcate, initially obscured by anthers, later apices extending between or above anthers, crests lacking. Capsules ± cylindric to club-shaped, 15-18 mm long. Seeds angular-prismatic.
