Plants 250-600 mm high. Corm 10-15 mm diam.; tunics of pale, coarse, ± woody fibres. Stem velvety-hairy, simple or 1-branched, sheathing leaves with dry attenuate apices, 45-60 mm long. Foliage leaf solitary, linear, basal, velvety on abaxial surface, exceeding stem, ± erect but often trailing distally. Rhipidial spathes with dry, brown, attenuate apices, inner 40-70(-80) mm long, outer ± 1/2 as long. Flowers long-lived, bright orange, rarely red or white, outer tepal limbs with blue-green, navy blue, turquoise or darkly spotted nectar guides at bases, spreading, claws bearing orange hairs; outer tepals 22-40 mm long, limbs (12-)15-21 x 15-23 mm, claws ± 10 mm long, diverging, densely velvety; inner tepals 15-25 mm long, either 3-lobed, with lateral lobes short, rounded, obtuse, central lobe linear, elongate, spreading or narrowly elliptic with acute apex. Filaments 4-5 mm long, united in a column, free near apices; anthers 7-10 mm long, reaching or exceeding style crests by up to 3 mm. Ovary ± 7-9 mm long; style branches 5-7 mm long, 2-5 mm wide, crests triangular, ± 2 mm long. Capsules cylindric, 20-40 mm long. Seeds large, angular, with spongy testa.
