Characteristics

Tree 8–25 m high; bark nondescript, lenticels prominent; leaf scars obvious. Leaves: petiole 10–32 mm long; lamina elliptic to oblanceolate to obovate, 8–22 cm long, 3–9 cm wide, cuneate base, often slightly revolute margin, obtuse apex, discolorous, coriaceous, glands chiefly dark red and globular. Inflorescence with 4–6 flowers per fascicle, peduncles 2–4 mm long and up to 3 mm wide. Flowers 5-merous; pedicels 3–8 mm long, tendency to curve in flower and in fruit; calyx similar in male and female flowers; corolla campanulate, white to cream, to 3 mm long in male and to 4.6 mm long in female, tube shorter than lobes; fertile anthers 1.5–2 mm long; pistillode to 0.5 mm long; ovary 1.5 mm long, style short or absent, stigmatic lobes spreading; ovules (3 or) 4. Fruit globular to depressed-globular, 5–9 × 5–7 mm, purplish.
