Characteristics

Shrub 0.5–2 m high, often much-branched, root suckers common, twigs sparsely hairy. Glands red, globular to shortly lineate. Leaves: petiole 1–5 mm long; lamina narrowly oblong to narrowly obovate, 3.5–8.2 cm long, 0.3–1.3 cm wide, cuneate base, frequently with several prominent teeth on margin towards the apex, obtuse apex, shiny above, paler below, coriaceous, glands visible on adaxial surface as dark bumps. Inflorescence with 5–7 (–10) flowers per fascicle, peduncles 0.5–1 mm long. Flowers chiefly 4-merous, pedicels 2–5 mm long; calyx similar in both sexes; corolla creamy-yellow, in male broadly pyriform tending to adhere at apex and to 3.5 mm long, in female campanulate and to 2 mm long, tube in both longer than lobes; anthers c. 1 mm long; ovary c. 0.6 mm long; stigma capitate, flattish on top; ovules 4. Fruit globular, 4–6 mm diam., purple.
