Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 10 m high; bark smooth, lenticels pale red. Leaves: petiole 3–8 mm long; lamina lanceolate to elliptic to obovate, often slightly asymmetrical, 6–15 cm long, 1.7–4.1 cm wide, cuneate base, entire, typically revolute (particularly near base) margin, acute to obtuse to slightly emarginate apex, discolorous, chartaceous when dry, glands a mixture of globular red to orange and lineate pellucid. Inflorescence with 3–5 flowers per fascicle, peduncles 2–5 mm long. Flowers 5-merous (rarely 4 or 6-merous); pedicels 0.3–1 mm long; calyx and corolla similar in both sexes; corolla campanulate, cream to light brown, lobes 2–3 mm long, apical portion strongly recurved; anthers c. 1 mm long exserted; ovary 1–1.5 mm long; stigma slender, elongated, curved to 2 mm long often shortly branched at apex into 2 or 3 arms; ovules 5. Fruit ± globose, c. 5 (–8) mm diam., purple.
