Characteristics

Shrub or small tree 2.5–25 m high, much-branched; buttresses present on larger trees; lenticels pale, corky; leaf scars obvious. Leaves: petiole 5–10 mm long; lamina oblanceolate to obovate, 4.2–11.7 cm long, 1.8–3.8 cm wide, cuneate base, revolute margin paler than rest of the blade, obtuse apex, paler beneath, coriaceous, glands a mixture, globular orange-red and pellucid globular and lineate. Inflorescence with 5–7 flowers per fascicle, peduncles to 2 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, pedicels 2–5 mm long, tendency to curve particularly when fruiting; calyx and corolla similar in both sexes; corolla campanulate, reddish, to 4 mm long; anthers to 2.5 mm long; ovary pyriform, 1.5 mm long; style stout; stigma thick capitate; ovules 4. Fruit depressed-globular, c. 4 × 4–5.5 mm, purple to black.
