Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 8 m high; branchlets weakly ridged. Leaves: petiole 3–10 mm long; lamina lanceolate to obovate, 7.9–15 cm long, 3.5–5.2 cm wide, cuneate base, entire margin, obtuse apex, discolorous, coriaceous, glands usually conspicuous, chiefly globular and lineate pellucid. Inflorescence with 4–9 flowers per fascicle, peduncles 0.5–1 mm long. Flowers 4-merous, pedicels 3–6 mm long; calyx and corolla similar in both sexes; corolla campanulate, white to cream, to 3.5 mm long; anthers 1–1.5 mm long; ovary globular to conical, to 2 mm long; stigma capitate, lobes 4, thick, irregularly spreading; ovules 4. Fruit globular, 3–4 × 4–5 mm, rarely larger, purple.
