Characteristics

Shrub or small tree 1–10 m high; lenticels pale. Leaves: petiole 3–7 mm long; lamina elliptic to oblanceolate to obovate, 4.8–16 cm long, 1.6–6.2 cm wide, cuneate base, entire and often slightly revolute margin, acute to obtuse apex, discolorous, coriaceous, glands chiefly lineate pellucid, readily visible when dry, small globular red dots inconspicuous. Inflorescence with 3–10 flowers per fascicle, peduncles to 2 mm long. Flowers usually 5-merous, pedicels 1–4 (–10) mm long; calyx and corolla similar in both sexes; corolla campanulate, greenish to white to yellowish, to 4 mm long; anthers c. 1–1.3 mm long; ovary globular, c. 0.8 mm long; stigma large, c. 0.5 mm long, irregularly lobed; ovules 5 or 6. Fruit globular to depressed-globular, 4–7 × 3–5 mm, purple to blue-black.
