Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 5 m high. Leaves: petiole 3–5 mm long; lamina elliptic to oblanceolate, 5.1–14.3 cm long, 1.5–3.2 cm wide, cuneate to attenuate base, entire, usually strongly undulate margin (rarely somewhat crenate), obtuse apex, discolorous, chartaceous to coriaceous, glands irregular red and lineate pellucid, distribution variable. Inflorescence with 4 or 5 flowers per fascicle, peduncles 0.5–1.5 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, pedicels 2.5–4 mm long;  male flowers only seen in bud, female corolla campanulate, greenish white, to 2.7 mm long, lobes reflexed; ovary to 1 mm long, stigmatic lobes 5, poorly defined; ovules 5. Fruit globular, to 5 mm diam., dark blue to black.
