Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 5 m high; young tips with rusty uniseriate hairs. Leaves: petiole 6–10 mm long, with reddish hairs when young; lamina lanceolate, ovate-lanceolate, rhomboidal to occasionally oblanceolate, 4.6–9 cm long, 2.2–4.5 cm wide, cuneate base, entire, flat to slightly revolute margin, obtuse, rarely slightly emarginate apex, discolorous, coriaceous, glands variable in size, chiefly red globular. Inflorescence with 5 or 6 flowers per fascicle, peduncles 0.5–2 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, pedicels filiform, 2.5–4 mm long, reddish uniseriate hairs present; corolla greenish to pale cream to pink. Calyx in both sexes similar, male corolla pyriform adhering at apex initially, female campanulate, to 2.5 mm long; anthers 0.7–0.8 mm long; ovary 1.2 mm long, stigmatic lobes spreading; ovules 3. Fruit depressed-globular, 4–5 × 5–6 mm, purplish black to black.
