Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 5 m high, rarely more; bark brownish to reddish brown. Leaves: petiole 1–4 (–5) mm long; lamina elliptic to lanceolate, 6.2–17.2 cm long, 1.8–6.1 cm wide, cuneate base, entire, flat to weakly undulate margin, acute to obtuse apex, discolorous, coriaceous, glands globular pellucid to orange when fresh, drying red. Inflorescence with 2–9 (–21) flowers per fascicle, peduncles 1–2 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, pedicels 2–5 mm long; corolla creamy-green to white to dull yellow, dusty pink even brownish. Calyx in both sexes similar; male corolla pyriform to ovoid, lobes adhering at apex separating first near the base of the lobes, anthers c. 1.5 mm long; female corolla campanulate, ovary 1–1.5 mm long, stigma thick with 5–8 ridges, ovules 5. Fruit globular to depressed-globular, (3–) 4–6 × 5–7 mm, blue to black.
