Characteristics

An erect herb, annual, glabrous below, puberulous above, branched from the base, 4-18 in. high; stem and branches tetragonous, smooth or nearly so, leafy below; leaves mostly opposite, sometimes fasciculate-verticillate, oblong, lanceolate or linear, obtuse at the apex, somewhat narrowed at the subsessile base or the lower shortly petiolate, mostly denticulate, 1/4-1 1/4 in. long, 1/24-1/3 in. broad, glabrous; racemes terminal, oblong, few-or many-flowered, 1-2 in. long; bracts alternate, sessile, mostly smaller than the leaves; pedicels rather slender, inserted in the axils of the bracts, 1/8-1/2 in. long; calyx-segments narrowly elliptical or sublinear, nearly glabrous, 1/10-1/8 in. long, obtuse; upper corolla-lobes oblong, rounded at the apex, 1/8-1/4 in. long; lower lip about as long as the upper; palate bearded with very slender hairs; spur conical, prolonged, obtuse, straight or nearly so, 1/8-1/5 in. long; capsules urceolate-oblong, somewhat contracted at the apex, unequally rounded or obtusely narrowed at the base, 1/5-1/4 in. long, 1/6-1/5 in. broad; valves subtruncate, apex nearly straight, shortly rounded on the inside edge, scarcely apiculate and very shortly rounded about the outer edge, making a very obtuse angle with that of the other valve.

Annual herb, up to 0.45 m high; stems erect, branched, puberulous in upper parts; hairs capitate with head usually wider than stalk. Leaves linear to lanceolate or oblong, denticulate, sessile. Flowers in lax racemes up to 50 mm long. Corolla white, yellow, blue or rarely red, upper lobes oblong, obtuse; palate cream-coloured or yellow with fine hairs. Spur extended conical, ± straight, 3-5 mm long. Flowering time mostly Aug.-Oct. Fruit a capsule, with length = breadth or somewhat longer, up to 6 x 5 mm.
Annual to 30 cm. Leaves opposite, elliptic-lanceolate, toothed. Flowers in racemes, white, blue, yellow, sometimes red with a raised, cream-coloured to yellow palate with 2 velvety bosses, upper lobes oblong, spur 3-5 mm long. Capsules as long as to slightly longer than wide.
