Characteristics

A nearly glabrous or somewhat pilose herb, erect, perennial, rigid, much branched near the base, leafy below, shining, pale green, 1-2 ft. high, hard or somewhat woody at the base; branches erect or promptly ascending, tetragonous, furrowed or striate; upper internodes longer than the leaves; leaves opposite, ovate, obtuse at the apex or nearly so, nearly rounded or somewhat narrowed at the sessile or subsessile 5-nerved subdecurrent base, denticulate, 3/8-1 in. long, 1/8-1/2 in. broad; teeth thickened or callous on the margin, rather small; racemes oblong or subcorymbose, several-or many-flowered, rather compact or dense, 1-6 in. long, bracteate; bracts narrowly lanceolate or sublinear, alternate, opposite or quasi-fasciculate, smaller than the leaves; pedicels axillary to the bracts, rigid, rather slender, 1/8-7/8 in. long, pilose; flowers blue; calyx-segments narrowly ovate-oval or-oblong or sublinear, 1/7-1/5 in. long, veined, pilose; upper corolla-lip about 1/6 in. long; lobes 4, rounded, about 1/12 in. long and broad; lower lip subhemispherical, about 1/6 in. in diam.; spur conical, obtuse, 1/16-1/12 in. long; capsule roundly ovate or oblong, emarginate at the apex, unequally rounded at the base, 1/4-1/2 in. long, 1/5-1/3 in. broad, not or slightly narrowed below the apex, not horned, outer angles of the top of the valves rounded or bluntly pointed; seeds winged, about 1/16 in. long and broad.
