Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 600 mm high; rootstock woody with underground runners; stems many, annual, herbaceous, tufted, laxly branched, leafy, usually with long, bare axis below flowers. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, 10-18 mm wide, obtuse, base sessile, somewhat decurrent, ± entire or somewhat denticulate. Flowers grouped in short, crowded hairy racemes. Corolla: tube with 2 ± flat, orange patches inside at spur mouth; limb blue, mauve, pale violet, pink or white, palate yellow or orange. Spur conical, extended, somewhat forward curved, (3-)5(-6) mm long. Flowering time July, Aug. Fruit an oval capsule, apex somewhat obliquely truncate.
