Characteristics

An erect herb, annual, simple or branched chiefly at the base, tender, 5-8 in. high; branches erect or ascending, glabrous; internodes mostly exceeding the leaves; leaves opposite; the lower spathulate-elliptic, obtuse at the apex, attenuate at the base into the petiole, 4/5-1 1/5 in. long, 1/5-2/5 in. broad, entire or obscurely dentate; upper leaves sessile or subsessile, lanceolate or sublinear, obtuse at both ends, gradually shorter; racemes lax, several-flowered; pedicels patent or erect-patent, filiform, very slender, 1/4-1/2 in. long; bracts alternate, ovate, obtuse, spreading, 1/12-1/4 in. long, thinly glandular-puberulous or nearly glabrous; calyx-segments narrowly oval-ovate, scarcely acute or subobtuse, glandular-puberulous, 1/10-1/8 in. long; corolla pale violet above, darker at the throat; two uppermost lobes erect, linear-ligulate, obtuse, 1/8-1/6 in. long; two lateral lobes somewhat shorter, erect-patent; lower lip subquadrate-oblong, rounded at the apex, sulphur-yellow, scarcely shorter than the upper, about 1/5 in. long; spur conical, subacute, somewhat incurved, sulphur-yellow, glabrous outside, 1/12 in. long, inside puberulous on the very open throat at the base of the lower lip; capsules ovoid-oblong, sub-truncate and excised at the apex, unequal and nearly rounded at the base, glabrous, a little contracted below the apex, not or scarcely horned, 1/5-3/8 in. long, 1/7-1/5 in. broad.

Flowers in lax racemes, calyx lobes lanceolate to ovate, glandular pilose, corolla 15-17 mm long, upper lip pale violet with red-violet lines, lower lip pale violet, with a convex palate at base, palate white to greenish yellow, spur ± 2 mm long, conical. Capsule ovate-oblong, ± 4 x 5 mm.
