An erect herb, annual, usually simple, slender, glabrous below, pilose above, shining, 8-12 in. high; stem obtusely quadrangular, smooth; upper internodes long, the lower short; leaves opposite, the lower obovate, rounded at the apex, wedge-shaped at the shortly petiolate base, subentire or denticulate, 5/8-3/4 in. long, 1/6-1/5 in. broad, the upper smaller, sublinear and sessile; racemes subcorymbose, several-flowered, 1/2-2 in. long; bracts mostly alternate, sublinear, entire, 1/12-1/6 in. long; pedicels inserted in the axils of the bracts, pilose, the lower ranging up to 3/4 in. long, the upper shorter; calyx-segments linear-oval, obtuse, puberulous, 1/12-1/6 in. long in flower, ranging up to 3/8 in. long in fruit; four upper corolla-lobes oblong, obtuse, 1/8-1/4 in. long; lower lip about as long as the upper, 1/5-1/3 in. long; palate slightly bearded; spur subfalcate, thickened at the free end, 1/5-1/3 in. long; capsules 3/8-2/5 in. long, 1/4-1/3 in. broad, unequally rounded at the base, broadly notched at the apex; valves curved at the apex, obtusely pointed at the outer side.

Flowers in lax racemes, calyx lobes oblong to ovate, glandular pilose, corolla 15-18 mm, upper lip white or pale yellow, with linear to narrowly oblong lobes and yellow to orange rectangular spot at base, lower lip yellow or orange with convex palate at base, palate with 2 orange bosses, glabrous, spur 5.5-7 mm long, projecting downward, obtuse, curving forward, obtuse or slightly swollen at tip. Capsule ± 7.2 x 5.9 mm, oblong, apex emarginate.
Annual to 40 cm. Leaves opposite, elliptic-lanceolate, slightly toothed. Flowers in racemes, white and yellow to orange or blue, sometimes entirely yellow, palate with 2 velvety bosses, upper lobes linear to narrowly oblong, spur curving forward and often blunt or slightly swollen at tip, 6-12 mm long.
