Genus

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Euphorbiaceae

Characteristics

Dioecious or rarely monoecious trees or shrubs with a stellate indumentum, sometimes with an admixture of simple hairs. Leaves alternate, long-petiolate, stipulate, simple, large, entire or subentire, minutely gland-dotted, palminerved. Inflorescences paniculate, terminal, often with the lowest racemose branches arising from the axils of the uppermost leaves, the ♂ inflorescences larger and more copious than ♀; flowers subsessile or shortly pedicellate. Male flowers: calyx globose in bud, later valvately 2–3-partite; petals 0; disc-glands 8–10, extrastaminal, minute; stamens 15–30(–40), filaments free, short, anthers oblong, basifixed, introrse, longitudinally dehiscent, connective tipped with 1–3 deciduous glands; pistillode 0. Female flowers: calyx 5(–6)-lobed, the lobes imbricate; petals 0; disc annular; ovary 3-locular, with 1 ovule per locule; styles connate at the base, rigid, bipartite, patent-recurved. Fruits 3-lobed, dehiscing septicidally into 3 bivalved cocci, leaving a persistent columella; endocarp woody. Seeds ovoid or ellipsoid, carunculate; testa crustaceous; albumen fleshy; cotyledons broad, flat.
