Characteristics

Tree, fluted, channelled or buttressed at base; suckers produced near base of some trees. Leaves alternate, simple, or pinnate on juvenile plants. Conflorescence a bracteate spike, sometimes paniculate, axillary in terminal leaves. Flowers ±actinomorphic, bisexual. Tepals 4, free. Stamens 4. Hypogynous glands 4, alternating with tepals. Ovary sessile, unilocular; style tip swollen; ovules 6-8. Fruit a woody follicle. Seeds 6-8, winged.
