Characteristics

An erect monopodial shrub with a thick, woody root stock from which new stems arise, generally 0.5–0.8 (–1.2) m high; stems terete, 2–6 mm diam., stiff. Leaves coriaceous, conduplicate and relatively rigid, entire, sessile and narrowly linear in basal rosettes, 6–10 cm long, 0.8–1 cm wide, subpetiolate and lanceolate in erect stems, to 11 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, clasping the stem for ⅔ its circumference at the base, not decurrent, apex acute, 3 or 4 longitudinal veins either side of midrib, tendrils always shorter than the lamina but usually less than 6 cm long, tightly curled and tensile in upper leaves. Lower pitchers infrequently seen, ovoid to infundibular in the basal third, cylindrical above, to 5.5 cm long and 1 cm wide, with two ventral wings to 2 mm wide bearing fringe elements to 2 mm long, mouth round and oblique, peristome cylindrical, c. 2 mm in diam., with minute, distinct ribs and short teeth to 0.2 mm long. Lid broadly ovate, larger than pitcher opening and held close to peristome, apex retuse, spur simple or bifid, to 2 mm long. Upper pitchers held above leaves by ⅔ their length, infundibular throughout, with or more typically without a hip ¼ of the way up from the base, to 15 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, wings reduced to ribs, fringe elements absent, pitcher usually held against apex of leaf in the lower ¼, peristome as per lower pitchers, but teeth on inner margin to 0.4 mm long. Lid with abaxial surface densely glandular, the glands ovate, c. 0.2 mm long, c. 100 glands per cm2 towards the midrib, c. 0.1 mm long towards margins with 150 glands per cm2. Inflorescence a racemose panicle; male inflorescence 25–30 cm long, peduncle 6–8 cm long, pedicels 1-flowered, 5–10 mm long, tepals elliptic, 4–5 mm long, adaxial surface with large, pitted glands; female inflorescence up to 20 cm long, pedicels 1 (2)-flowered, to 8 mm long, abracteate; tepals ovate, to 4 mm long, ovary 5–6 mm long, 2–3 mm in diame.; mature fruits to 15 mm long, seeds fusiform, 5.5–6 mm long.
