Nerine angustifolia W.Watson

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Amaryllidaceae > Nerine

Characteristics

A very variable species with pronounced pubescence on the pedicels. The leaves are narrow, 3 to 5 mm wide, linear and not filiform. The scape is terete and generally between 40 and 100 cm in length but can exceed this considerably and 135 cm was recorded at Carolina. The pedicels can vary in number from 4 to 8 up to 16. The average number in the Carolina population was about 8. Similarly the length of the pedicels can vary very greatly and has been recorded as 1-3 to 5 to (7) cm and 2-5 to 4-5 cm. The largest I have seen measured 11 cm in length. The perianth segments can range from under 3 cm to 5 cm long by 5 mm wide. The shape of the floret is constant with long thin segments spreading irregularly outwards and upwards sometimes with a single segment remaining in a more or less horizontal position below the filaments. Whilst the first half to two-thirds of the segments are relatively straight, from this point they curve outwards and in some populations backwards, in a circinate fashion.
