Nerine frithii L.Bolus

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Amaryllidaceae > Nerine

Characteristics

Segments of N. frithii are larger-1-5 cm compared with only 1 cm in N. hesseoides, and can be even more recurved with the tip of the segments almost touching the ovary. The next point is that the stamen appendices tend to appear joined one to another whereas in N. hesseoides they are clearly separate almost to the base. In N. frithii the arrangement of the segments is not strictly regular (actinomorphic) as in N. hesseoides, they are not however set sideways and upwards as in N. transvaalensis but the angle between the lower pair of segments is generally wider than between the others. Whether this characteristic will hold good over a wide range of material has yet to be demonstrated. The fact that the distribution of this and such a closely related species appears to overlap gives additional grounds to doubt the validity of specific status. Scape up to 20 cm with an umbel of 5 to 7 whitish flowers with a darker central stripe.
