Characteristics

Short broad pink segments with a prominent green keel on the under side. The segments are about 1 cm long by about 4-5 mm wide, i.e. some three times the width of those in N. rehmannii. The segments in N. gracilis are regularly arranged and in maturity form an open cup. They are not recurved. There are prominent appendages at the base of the filaments which usually take the form of two teeth. The scapes, which can be 20 cm in length, occasionally show a few scattered transparent hairs. The very open flower head carries from 8 to 12 or more flowers.

Flowers: in a 8-10-flowered umbel; pedicels 40-70 mm long, glandular-pubescent or hairy; perianth erect, actinomorphic, lobes elliptic-oblong, smooth or crisped, ± 10 mm long, pink or white, suffused with pink; Feb., Mar.
