Nerine pudica Hook.F.

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Amaryllidaceae > Nerine

Characteristics

As with the N. humilis group, to which this is related, this species again has no pubescence, no appendices, a round or nearly round scape and leaves that are linear with an obtuse tip. It is immediately identified by the shape of the flower, the perianth which has the segments almost regularly spread, i.e. nearly actinomorphic (in some the lower pair are very slightly more widely divided than the others and in some a single segment lies immediately below the filaments and the adjacent pair may be slightly more widely separated) and it is far more funnel-form than in other members of this group with the segments overlapping for 2/3 to 3/4 of their length. The segments in the type specimen are pure white with a dark red streak down the centre of each segment on both surfaces, most marked towards the base of the inner surface. A pink form has been recorded. Unlike the segments of all the other N. humilis related species, N. pudica has virtually no crisping of the segments at all. The flowers are few in number, 2, 3, 4, or 5 being usual with up to 8 being recorded and the scape is short, about 30 to 45 cm.
