Nerine sarniensis Herb.

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Amaryllidaceae > Nerine

Characteristics

A strong slender stem usually of a foot or more in length (25-45 cm) and somewhat compressed; a rounded head with from 7-20 pedicels giving a total width of up to about 6 inches (15 cm). The segments of each floret are regularly arranged, as with N. marginata [Brunsvigia marginata], but, unlike that species, they are often much crinkled and recurved. The colour is very variable from crimson to scarlet and pink, a white sport has occurred and is still in cultivation. There is no pubescence and no appendix to the base of the stamens. The stamens stand erect. Leaves are variable in colour; the forms known as 'Fothergillii' and 'Fothergillii major' have more glaucous leaves, but 'Corusca' and others are green. Leaves are about a foot long (30 cm) and from a half to an inch or so wide (1-2 to 2-5 mm). (In cultivation these dimensions can be considerably exceeded).
