Perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high; hispid. Leaves in a basal rosette, usually withered at flowering, and along stem, alternate; blade of basal leaves elliptic, up to 150 x 40 mm, apex obtuse, base tapering to petiole-like region, margins nearly entire or callose-denticulate to crenate, both surfaces hispid and minutely glandular; stem leaves similar, becoming smaller and oblong to very narrowly obovate to linear upwards, base cordate-clasping. Heads disciform (inconspicuously radiate), ± 4 mm in diameter, many in compact, corymbose clusters; peduncles hispid, bracts cordate-clasping. Involucral bracts biseriate, glandular. Flowers: (ray) outer florets female, in several series; disc florets with abortive ovary; yellow; Mar., Apr. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, slightly compressed, thinly hairy. Pappus uniseriate, of many scabrid bristles.

Flowering time Feb., Mar. Pappus of barbellate bristles. Cypselae turbinate, slightly compressed, thinly hairy.
