A coarse perennial herb up to c. 1.5 m tall, stems often simple below, corymbosely branched above, pubescent, leafy. Leaves up to c. 9 x 3.5 cm, very variable particularly in shape and toothing, but always pubescent and more or less conspicuously eared at the base, varying from linear-lanceolate and tapering much to both base and apex, to oblong-elliptic or obovate, contracting gradually or abruptly to a petiole-like, clasping base, the upper leaves often narrower than the lower and tapered to the base or not, margins entire to coarsely toothed or lobulate. Heads small (c. 2-3 mm across when pressed), pale or deep yellow, in compact corymbose clusters corymbosely arranged. Involucral bracts in 2-3 series, inner not quite equalling the pappus, outer with a conspicuous resinous keel, more or less pilose. Achenes 1 mm long, elliptic, slightly compressed, with 2 marginal, 2 median, ribs, appressed pubescent. Pappus bristles scabrid, a little longer than the achene.

There can be some irregular teeth along the edge of the leaf. There are soft hairs on both sides of the leaves. The flowers are in half round branched heads. The flowers are golden yellow.
