Characteristics

Annual herb, up to 1 m high. Leaves alternate, sessile; blade obovate to linear-obovate, apex acute to obtuse, margins entire, lanate, sometimes becoming glabrescent with age, but always retaining some lanate hairs at nodes or in leaf axils. Heads minutely radiate (disciform), small, many in compact, corymbose clusters. Involucral bracts 2-or 3-seriate, pilose. Flowers: outer flowers with a short ray, female, in several series; disc florets bisexual; both yellow; Dec., Jan. Fruit with cypsela elliptic, slightly compressed, faintly ribbed, appressed-pubescent. Pappus uniseriate, of copious, barbellate bristles.
