Characteristics

A perennial herb spreading by means of underground runners, flowering stems simple, up to 1 m tall, glandular puberulous particularly on the inflorescence branches, leafy. Basal leaves up to 30 x 4 cm, rosetted, often withered at flowering, linear-oblong or lingulate, much attenuated to a broadly winged petiole-like base, apex more or less obtuse, margins entire, repand-toothed or serrate, glabrous or very nearly so, cauline leaves similar but decreasing in size upwards, becoming sessile, subcordate-clasping, and passing into elliptic-oblong to lanceolate, obtuse, acute or acuminate inflorescence bracts. Heads c. 4 mm across when pressed, many in compact corymbose clusters corymbosely arranged. Involucral bracts in 2 series, shorter than the pappus, linear-lanceolate, glandular, median veins resinous. Achenes c. 1 mm long, turbinate, slightly compressed, thinly hairy. Pappus bristles scabrid.
