Characteristics

Bushy perennial herb up to 35 cm (or more) high, much branched, covered in white spreading curved, often eglandular hairs. Stems erect, 1-several from a stout woody base; branches slender, ± terete. Leaves closely set, sessile and ± sheathing at the base, slightly fleshy, 7-20 x 0.5-1.1 mm, linear or linear-lanceolate, occasionally linear-spathulate, acuminate, mucronate, both surfaces ± shortly hairy. Flowers ± erect, slightly zygomorphic, axillary or leaf-opposed, arranged into short, terminal, subpaniculiform cymes; pedicels 2.5-7 mm long, slender, densely and shortly hairy. Calyx 8-12 mm long, campanulate, slightly curved, shortly hairy, more densely so along the ribs; lobes ± unequal, 3-6 x 0.7-2 mm, linear to triangular-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, mucronate. Corolla purplish to violet coloured or bluish, with a yellow centre, 2-3 cm long, infundibular-salviform, hairy outside with fine eglandular hairs and shorter glandular hairs and similar shorter indumentum inside around the insertion of the filaments; tube 1-1.6 cm long, slender, the basal part persistent in fruit; limb 1-1.5 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm in diameter, broadly campanulate or crateriform; lobes obtuse or rounded at the apex. Stamens subequal, inserted at the throat; filaments slightly connate at the base, 6-7 mm long, with gland-tipped hairs scattered from the base to about the middle; anthers 0.8-1 mm long, broadly elliptic in outline. Disk none. Ovary ± sessile, c. 2 mm long, elongate, ± ellipsoid or conic; style 14-20 mm long, straight to slightly curved at the apex. Fruit sessile, c. 7 mm long, ovoid-ellipsoid. Seeds c. 1 x 0.5 mm, ± elliptic in outline, foveolate or pitted.
