Characteristics

Shrubs 150-900 mm high, usually rounded and with several branches from the base. Stem few and irregularly branched, the leafy part ± 2.5 mm diam. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, (40-)60-100 mm long, 2-3 mm wide. Inflorescence a compound, corymb-like false panicle, (12)20-to 60-flowered (6 to 30 flower pairs), primary peduncles exserted, compressed, 2-4 mm wide, ultimate peduncles bearing paired flowers within spathes; spathes 4-5 mm long, dry, brown, brittle-chaffy, green near base, bracts dry and red-brown, 9-10 mm long, firm-membranous, dry, brown, much-wrinkled above spathes. Flowers salver-shaped, heterostylous, deep to light blue, tube nearly white; perianth tube 9-15 x 1.3-1.8 mm, cylindric; tepals spreading horizontally, elliptic, 7.5-10.0 x 4.3-5.0 mm. Filaments either short, 2-3 mm long (pin flower) or 7-9 mm long (thrum flower); anthers ± 1.8 mm long before anthesis, later ± 1 mm long, dark blue-violet; pollen blue. Style either short, 7-12 mm long (thrum flower), dividing just below to ± 1.5 mm above mouth of tube, or 15-18 mm long, exserted 7-8 mm from tube (pin flower); style branches filiform, ± 1 mm long (± 0.3 mm in some long-styled plants). Capsules subglobose, ± 4 mm x 3 mm. Seeds usually 1 per locule, rugose, blackish with a transparent outer layer, ± 3.3 x 1.8-2.0 mm.
