Characteristics

Low, often rounded, evergreen shrublets 120-200 mm high. Stems seldom branched except near base; leafy stems 2-3 mm wide. Leaves linear (rarely narrowly lanceolate), 60-100 x 1.3-2.5 mm. Inflorescence flat-topped, usually branched and with 2 to 6 flowers but rarely only one; primary peduncle compressed and included in leaf cluster, first node bearing a dry brown bract 5-9 mm long, bracts at other nodes smaller, individual flowers single in paired spathes, spathes green with brown apices, ± 6 mm long; bracts brown-membranous, semi-transparent, 10-12 mm long. Flower salver-shaped, homostylous, deep blue, ± white at tepal bases and in tube; perianth tube ± 15 mm long, ± cylindric, ± 1 mm wide at base, expanding gradually up to 2 mm at mouth; tepals spreading, elliptic-oblanceolate, up to 22 mm long, outer 9 mm wide, inner 8 mm wide. Filaments ± 6 mm long; anthers ± 3 mm long. Style exserted from tube for ± 6 mm, dividing near middle of anthers, white, branches filiform, ± 4 mm long, ciliate in upper 1/3, arching upwards. Capsules obovoid, ± 6 x 4 mm. Seeds usually 1 per locule, dark brown, ± 5 x 2 mm.
