Characteristics

Subshrub forming compact, rounded cushions 100-250 mm high. Stems several to many from base, central nearly erect, laterals inclined, compressed, occasionally branched but showing apical dominance with a few spur-shoots produced each season, leafy part ± 2 mm wide. Leaves crowded apically, grey-green, 35-45 x 2.0-2.5 mm, narrowly lanceolate, acute. Inflorescence a single flower pair on a terminal peduncle 2-3 mm long, a single leafy bract subtending paired spathes; spathes green; floral bracts tubular, 9-15 mm long, membranous, light straw-coloured. Flowers ± salver-shaped, blue, darker at tepal bases, tube pale; perianth tube 20-25(-30) mm long, cylindric, ± 1 mm diam. At base, 1.5 mm at mouth; tepals lanceolate, ± 12 mm long, 3.5-4.0 mm wide, ascending below, ultimately recurved in upper half. Filaments ± 2.5 mm long; anthers ± 1 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite or sometimes 2-3 mm above anthers, branches filiform, ± 2.5 mm long, white. Capsules obovoid, 4.5-5.5 mm long, often only one locule with a seed. Seeds ± 3 mm long, 1 per locule.
