Characteristics

Shrubs (200-)400-900 mm high. Stem several-branched from base and in upper part, leafy shoots 3-4 mm diam. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, 50-90 x 2.5-3.5 mm. Inflorescence panicle-like, (20)40-to 80-flowered (10 to 40 flower pairs), peduncles exserted, 3-4 mm wide, ultimate branchlets bearing a pair of flowers within spathes; spathes 3-4 mm long, leathery, green below, dry and brown above, floral bracts dry and reddish brown, 8-9 mm long, firm-membranous below, much-wrinkled above. Flowers salver-shaped, heterostylous, deep blue throughout; perianth tube 32-38 mm long, ± 1.5 mm wide, cylindric, lower 2-5 mm filled with nectar; tepals ± patent, elliptic, 10-12 x 3-4 mm. Filaments either long, nearly 10-12 mm long (thrum flowers) or short, 2-3 mm long (pin flowers); anthers ± 1.4 mm long before anthesis, dark blue; pollen pale blue. Style either short and dividing just below to ± 1 mm above mouth of tube, 33-36 mm long (thrum flower) or 40-50 mm long, exserted ± 10 mm from tube (pin flower), branches filiform, 0.5-1.0 mm long, often shorter in thrum flowers, diverging after anther dehiscence. Capsules subglobose, 4-5 mm long. Seeds 1 per locule, rugose, dark brown, 3.0-3.5 x 1.8-2.0 mm.
