Characteristics

Shrub or small tree. Leaves alternate, ± discolorous, penniveined, petiolate; stipules free, herbaceous, auriculate, fringed with glands or much reduced. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, comprising few-flowered cymes in small panicles. Flowers bisexual, 5-merous. Hypanthium cup-shaped. Sepals erect, caducous. Petals cucullate, not clawed, incurved or erect. Stamens subequal to the petals, incurved. Disc thin, lining the hypanthium, smooth, glabrous. Ovary half-inferior; carpels 3. Fruit a capsule with basal torus, the mericarps splitting along their inner face to release the seeds.
