Characteristics

Solitary erect palms. Stems smooth with annular leaf scars. Leaves paripinnate, plumose; leaf sheaths tubular, forming a crownshaft. Pinnae reduplicate, irregularly arranged, clustered, divided longitudinally to base into 7–11 segments, apically truncate and praemorse, green above, blue-grey below. Inflorescence infrafoliar, paniculate, branched to 3 orders; bracts 2, caducous; peduncle short; prophyll tubular; peduncular bract tubular, apically exserted; rachis elongate; bracts subtending branches low. Flowers spirally arranged, with triads in proximal portion, staminate flowers in distal portion. Staminate flowers symmetric, bulletshaped in bud; petals thick, rigid; stamens 24–40; anthers dorsifixed; filaments short; pistillode bottle-shaped, longer than stamens. Pistillate flower ovoid; staminodes 3. Fruit ovoid to obpyriform, beaked distally, pink to scarlet-brown; stigmatic remains apical; epicarp smooth; mesocarp fleshy, moderately fibrous toward endocarp, with thin fibres adherent to endocarp; endocarp thin. Seed laterally attached, terete in cross-section; hilum lateral; raphe long, unbranched; endosperm ruminate; embryo basal. Eophyll bifid.
