Characteristics

Evergreen shrub or tree to 50 m high (to c. 20 m high as understorey tree), frequently with adventitious shoots, sometimes multi-stemmed; trunk to 2.5 m diam.; young foliage orange to red or golden-bronze. Leaves alternate, simple, very shortly petiolate; lamina ovate to triangular, rhomboidal or ± orbicular, (3–) 6–25 mm long, cuneate to truncate base, bluntly toothed margin, obtuse to acute apex, firm, ± flat, glossy, dark green above, paler beneath, gland-dotted; stipules 2–4 mm long, membranous, caducous except on inflorescence-branches. Male inflorescence with 1–3 flowers; perianth 6-lobed, 2–3 mm long; stamens 8–12. Female inflorescence ovoid, 2–4 mm long, with 3 flowers. Fruits in a cupule 6–7 mm long; valves with 4 or 5 rows of recurved teeth.
