Characteristics

Evergreen tree to 50 m high, sometimes multi-trunked, frequently with adventitious shoots (coppicing); trunk to 1.5 m diam.; new spring foliage reddish brown to red, dying leaves often orange-red. Leaves alternate, simple; petiole 3–5 mm long; lamina ovate to ovate-elliptic or ovate-lanceolate, 30–80 (–100) mm long, cuneate base, serrulate margin, acute apex, leathery, flat except for raised veins, ± glabrous, shiny, dark green above, duller, paler beneath; stipules 8–15 mm long, norrow, often reflexed, caducous. Male inflorescence rounded or flattened, c. 1 cm diam. with 8–12-lobed involucre surrounding 1–3 flowers totalling 15–40 stamens. Female inflorescence ovoid, c. 5 mm long, with 3 flowers. Fruits in a cupule 8–10 mm long; valves 4, prickly.

Environment

Cool temperate rainforest, usually on fertile soils, often in pure stands, or as an understorey in tall eucalypt forest at elevations above 800 metres. A dominant species in cool-temperate rainforest; at elevations up to 1,550 metres.
