Herbaceous bulbous perennials with no or little onion or garlic odour. Leaves basal, flat, linear. Inflorescence scapose, umbellate; spathe composed of 2 bracts overlapping at base. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, pedicellate. Perianth segments 6, united at base into short tube. Stamens 6; filaments linear; anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior; ovules 4-12 per locule; placentation axile; style terminal. Fruit a membranous capsule. Seeds many, angled, black.
Bulbous herbs, resembling garlic but without its smell; bulbs producing many bulbils. Leaves linear, soft, flat. Flowers in umbels on long stems overtopping leaves; 2 small bracts below umbel, distinctly overlapping at base; flowers 10–25 per umbel. Perianth united only at base; lobes white to greenish white. Stamens shorter than tepals, filaments linear-lanceolate, adjoining in lower half. Ovary obovoid with many ovules. Fruit papery. Seeds shiny, angled.

Tepals 6, shortly connate at base, white, sometimes with a purple median streak. Stamens 6, inserted on the base of the perianth; filaments ligu-late. Ovary with many ovules per locule. Fruit a capsule, loculicidally 3-valved. Seeds several, black.
