Species

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Ochnaceae > Ochna

Characteristics

Small tree 3–7 m tall with slender trunk or sometimes branched from base; bark silver-grey, rectangularly fissured near base, smooth above; branches stout, brown, sometimes lenticellate and often somewhat ridged when young.. Leaves glaucous, grey-green in life, tufted at ends of shoots, broadly oblong-elliptic to obovate, 4.5–14.5 cm long, 3.5–8.5 cm wide, very broadly rounded or slightly emarginate at apex, broadly cuneate at the base, crenate-serrulate; lateral veins prominent on both surfaces and very closely reticulate, the tertiary venation less so; petiole 5–20 mm long; stipules triangular, 4 mm long, soon deciduous.. Fruiting specimens only known, but from this evidence flowers 7–16 in condensed racemiform inflorescences with rhachis up to 13 mm long, several forming a ± globose cluster 8–15 cm wide at end of branches; pedicels 2.6–4 cm long, jointed at base.. Fruiting sepals orange-red to scarlet, 16–25 mm long, 10–15 mm wide.. Anthers 2 mm long, opening by longitudinal slits (fide Robson).. Carpels 5–6, the styles completely united; stigma 5-lobed.. Drupelets black, ellipsoid, 10–13 mm long, 8–10 mm wide, inserted at base.
