Characteristics

Leaves petiolate or subsessile; lamina 3·1–9·5 × 0·6–2·6 cm., oblanceolate to linear-oblanceolate or more rarely narrowly oblong, obtuse (rarely subacute) to rounded at the apex, herbaceous or chartaceous, with margin densely serrulate with the curved teeth often overlapping the margin, attenuate at the base, with spreading or somewhat ascending main and subsidiary lateral nerves and densely reticulate tertiary venation prominent above but scarcely so below; petiole very short, 0·5–1 mm. long, stout.

Shrub or rhizomatous shrublet up to 0·6 m. high (? or higher), with bark brown and longitudinally ridged; branches virgate or ± widely spreading, usually markedly flattened and/or ridged, white or purplish, ± densely pustulose-lenticellate.
Flowers 2–4, in a subumbellate axillary inflorescence; pedicels 0·7–1·6 cm. long in fruit, articulated at or within 1 mm. of the base.
Sepals 5–6 mm. long in flower, oblong, rounded, becoming carmine, (11) 13–16 mm. long, flat, and spreading or reflexed in fruit.
Stamens with anthers 1–1·5 mm. long, 1/4–1/3 as long as the filaments, straight, dehiscing by longitudinal slits.
Drupelets subglobose, 5–8 × 4–6·5 mm., inserted near the base; embryo slightly curved.
Petals bright yellow, 7–10 × 3–6 mm., obovate, shortly unguiculate.
Carpels 5, with styles completely united; stigma 5-lobed.
