Characteristics

Evergreen tree, 4-30 m high; plants dioecious or polygamous. Leaves oblong, up to 120 x 50 mm, penninerved, coriaceous, glabrous, base ± rounded, apex shortly attenuate, margins wavy. Flowers in axillary clusters, small, yellowish green. Tepals deciduous. Bisexual flowers with stamens in 3 or 4 whorls, outer 3 fertile, inner reduced to staminodes; filaments of innermost whorl with 2 large, glands at base; anthers 4-thecous, introrse in 2 outer whorls, ± extrorse in third whorl; ovary ovoid. Male flowers similar but ovary sterile. Female flowers as in bisexual flowers but stamens rudimentary. Flowering time Dec.-Feb. Fruit seated in enlarged, cupular receptacle; baccate, oval, ± 20 mm long, purple when ripe.
