Shrub or woody herb, 1-3 m tall. Stem subquadrangular, glabrous or hirsute to pilose, with raised lenticels on angles. Petiole 5-50 mm long, hirtellous; blade lanceolate to oblong or ovate, 14.5-33 x 4.5-11 cm, margin crenulate, short acuminate to cuspidate at apex, cuneate to rounded at base, glabrous on both surfaces, cystoliths minute and visible on both surfaces; primary vein and secondary veins (8-10 pairs) hirtellous to pilose. Inflorescence a narrow, erect, compact, terminal thyrse to 15 cm long; flowers in fascicles of 4-5; rachis hirtellous; bracts subulate, 1-2 x 0.5-1 mm; pedicels 1-2 mm long, minutely puberulous; bracteoles similar to bracts, 1 x 0.5 mm. Calyx lobes narrowly triangular, 1-3 x 0.5-1 mm, puberulent; corolla red, tubular, 35-42 mm long, tube 2 mm wide at base, 4-6 mm wide apically, puberulent without, with longer, more spreading trichomes within on lower part, upper lip of oblong lobes 17 x 5 mm, lower lip similar but lobes 2-4 mm wide; stamens extended to lower edge of corolla throat, filaments 15 mm long, basally pilose, anthers 4-5 mm long, staminodes 1-6 mm long, adnate to stamen for nearly 4 mm and tipped with a rudimentary anther; ovary glabrous, style included, 16-22 mm long, stigma 2-lobed. Capsule clavate, 20-40 x 3-5 x 6 mm; seeds 4, 5 x 4 mm, pitted and grooved, oblique at base.
