Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Oedera

Characteristics

A moderately branched, up to c. 0.5 m high shrub. Stems ascending-erect, glabrous, leafy, becoming nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves alternate or especially on young vegetative shoots decussate and in four distinct rows, spreading or usually squarrose-recurved, usually somewhat canaliculate and bent backwards (recurved), but sometimes more irregularly bent, mid-ribbed, elliptic, seldom approaching orbicular, 2-15 mm long, 1.5-7 mm wide, glabrous or seldom sparsely pilose marginally, indistinctly glandular-punctate, acute-obtuse and mucronate with hooked apex. Capitula 3-12 together in terminal cymes. Peduncles 2-10 mm long during flowering. Involucre campanulate, 2-6 mm wide. Involucral bracts 25-60, outer ovate, inner gradually narrower and oblong, innermost narrowly obovate-spatulate with a spreading apical limb, up to 8 mm long, up to 2 mm wide, dorsally gland-dotted, obtuse-rounded, light yellowish brown but apically ± dark brown thus usually giving the involucre a regularly and distinctly spotted appearance. Receptacle flat-conical, paleate. Paleae canaliculate, linear or narrowly spatulate, 5-8 mm long, apically 0.3-0.9 mm wide, apically and dorsally gland-dotted, acute. Ray-florets 7-20. Tube cylindrical, 2-3 mm long, ± glandular. Lamina elliptic, 2-3.5 mm long, 0.8-1.5 mm wide, 4-veined. Style 3-5 mm long; style-branches 1.2-2 mm long. Achenes as in disc-florets, but occasionally sparsely pilose. Disc-florets 20-60, perfect. Corolla 3.6-5.6 mm long, 0.6-0.9 mm wide. Tube cylindrical, ± glandular. Limb narrowly cyathiform; corolla lobes 0.3-0.6 mm long, dorsally ± gland-dotted. Style 3.5-5.8 mm long; style-branches 0.5-0.9 mm long, apically penicillate and truncate; stylopodium distinct. Anthers 1.8-2.5 mm long; tails c. 1/5 of the length of the anther. Achenes almost terete, linear, 1.8-4.5 mm long, 0.3-0.6 mm wide, glabrous; pappus crownlike, of connate scales, up to 0.6 mm long.
