Annual or perennial herb, 0.12-0.30 m high; erect, stems 4-ribbed, spreading, much branched. Leaves linear, 15 x 1 mm, base cuneate, apex acute, glabrous; petioles not developed. Stipular sheath short, truncate, with a few setae. Flowers usually isostylous; pedicels graceful, spreading. Calyx: tube ovoid, papillate or shortly hairy; lobes narrowly triangular, margins scabridulous. Corolla white or lilac; tube green, 2-11 mm long, cylindrical; lobes mauve with purple marks, ovate. Stigma: lobes filiform, 0.7-0.9 mm long. Flowering time Oct.-Mar. Fruit straw-coloured, subglobose capsule, crowned by blackish calyx lobes, papillate or shortly hairy; beak up to 1 mm long. Seeds brown, ± ovoid, angular.
Leaf blades 0.6–5.5 cm. x 1–3.5(5) mm., linear to linear-lanceolate, acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous or with a few setae at the margins; petiole not developed; stipule sheath short, rarely exceeding 0.5 mm., truncate, with a few setae c. 0.3 mm. long but not fimbriate.
Capsule pale straw-coloured, 2.2–5 x 1.5–2 mm., subglobose, crowned by the blackish calyx lobes, glabrous, papillate or shortly hairy; beak 0.3–1 mm. long.
Flowers usually isostylous but in one variety markedly heterostylous, solitary or paired at the nodes; pedicels graceful, spreading (0.3)0.8–3.5 cm. long.
Calyx tube 0.5–1 mm. long, ovoid, glabrous, papillate or shortly hairy; lobes 0.5–2.5 mm. long, narrowly triangular, scabridulous on the margins.
Corolla white, lilac or mauve or tube green and lobes mauve with purple marks; tube 0.2–1.1 cm. long, cylindrical; lobes 1–3 mm. long, ovate.
